Mighty MiraclesJoin with Mighty Miracles Foundation and send your crocheted octopi and/or your knitted or sewn hearts to bring comfort and healing to families of premature infants

Amanda Dickinson visited my church prayer shawl group recently with a story to share.

She shared with us the story of her second child, Kaleb, who had to be born entirely too soon because of a heart defect. She told us how consumed with worry and fear she had been. And she also told us how her birth experience was one hundred percent different than the one she had experienced with her firstborn.

Life in the NICU with a premature infant is nothing like life in the maternity wing. As Amanda says on the “About Us” page of the Mighty Miracles Foundation website :

…With the premature birth, gone was the ‘typical’ birth experience with congratulations, balloons, and flowers from family and friends. Gone were the baby things in the postpartum room. Here was this new life that had just been born, and family and friends didn’t know what to say or do.”

Amanda said she found herself wishing that she could give every other family new to the NICU a hug, because she knew just how it felt. She said she could read their expressions and remember exactly what it was like to be a new mom in an intimidating environment. Devoid of congratulations and excitement, the NICU felt like an alternative universe.

And so the concept for a new charity was born:

The idea for Mighty Miracles continued to take shape for the 99 days I spent beside Kaleb’s isolette. The passion for it grew as I would spend the afternoons rocking him and felt like a new parent all over again as I learned what it meant to care for a NICU baby. Through it all came the idea for care packages for NICU families.”

What Mighty Miracles Does to Support NICU Families

Mighty Miracles’ mission is to reach out to families of preemies who are plunged into this strange new world. They offer two freebies for preemie families: Mighty Miracles Care Packages and Mighty Miracles NICU Graduation Keepsakes.

The Mighty Miracles Care Package includes 6 components:

1) The World of the NICU. This book introduces preemie parents to the NICU so that they can better navigate it. It also offers space for documenting the preemie’s progress and organizing for life after the NICU.

2) A children’s book, for reading times to allow parents to bond with their preemie.

3) Bonding hearts. These also allow parents to bond with their preemies. The hearts are worn close to parents’ skin, so their scent is transferred. Then the heart is taken to the preemies so that they can feel their parents’ presence even in their absence.

The heart can also be taken back to the mother for aid in lactation.

4) Mighty Miracles bracelets

5) A Mighty Miracles tote bag

6) Finally, artwork for the NICU room, to give the space a more home-y feeling. This artwork is laminated to allow for cleaning and sanitization. And it can be placed around the preemie’s isolette or anywhere else within the NICU space.

Mighty Miracles NICU Graduation Keepsakes offer a joyous way for preemie families to celebrate their preemies’ homecoming. It includes a “graduation certificate” and a My NICU Family print. The latter offers space for anyone involved in the preemie’s time in the NICU to sign.

Finally, Mighty Miracles also offers NICU Octopi for $10 donations (you can read more about these octopi here). It also offers Deluxe packages for $35 donations.

How You Can Help the Mighty Miracles Foundation

There are many ways that you can help the Mighty Miracles mission!

First, if you are a crocheter, you can create NICU octopi. You’ll find a link to the pattern on this page.Mighty Miracles

If you sew or knit, you can also create bonding hearts. For the fabric bonding hearts, you can visit the link above for the sewing pattern.

To knit a bonding heart, I recommend you use either this pattern – the Hugs and Kisses Heart – or one of the two versions of this pattern I created, which you can find on this page! My versions simply remove the cabling of the original pattern. The first version has more texture, while the second uses mostly simple stockinette for a smoother surface.

All three patterns are free!

Be sure to spread the word to your knitting, sewing, crocheting, and even your non-crafting friends. After all, Mighty Miracles can always use donations! It’s a registered nonprofit, so all donations are tax-deductible.

The Get Involved page also will show you where you can ship your completed octopi and/or bonding hearts.

This is the first time I’ve ever been able to meet a charity director in person, and it was one of the most touching and exciting experiences of my life. I’ve been knitting hearts like crazy!

Amanda told us that she needs lots and lots of bonding hearts. So I hope all my knitting and sewing friends will be excited and eager to take part in this fabulous charity!

Are you missing your in-person knitting nights? If Are you missing your in-person knitting nights? If so, let me tell you about a virtual knitting event you won't want to miss!

The great folks at Knit + Escape are holding a Galentine's Day virtual celebration from Feb. 4 to 6. A $10 ticket will give you access to vendor virtual booths and a whole lot of free content that includes fiber demos and lectures, farm tours, charity knitting, and much, MUCH more.

And here's a bonus that I hope you'll love: your Marketplace Ticket includes access to the Friday Evening CHARITY KNIT NIGHT, an exciting event led by Kristy Glass, where I will be a special guest. We’ll have several opportunities for participants to ask questions and celebrate the spirit of giving!

I'm going to be talking about creating Bonding Hearts and how these wonderful little creations can help preemies and their families through an amazing organization called Mighty Miracles Foundation.

I would LOVE to see you there, so I hope you'll join us! You'll find a registration link to this event in my profile.
(Please note: the following has nothing to do with (Please note: the following has nothing to do with charity knitting. But I can't be silent any longer. If I - and Knitting for Charity - am going to be for making the lives of others better, I have to speak up.) I've been wanting to say something for well over a week. But I felt like it wasn't my place to talk. This isn't my experience. I should be listening.
But I want to make something clear.
Systemic racism is not a theory. It's not a kooky idea. It's a fact of life. And whether white people feel like they've benefited from it or not (I'm sure most of us feel like we haven't)... we have.
Sure, slavery is no more. Sure, Jim Crow laws are no more. But racism? It's still very much here. And it pushes down our brothers and sisters of color every. single. day. It makes them fear for their lives, no matter what they're doing. It makes their very existence a risk.
And I've finally realized that it's not enough for me to believe these things in my heart and go on with my life as if there's nothing more I can do. It's not enough to be proudly "not a racist." By my silence, by my inaction, I'm perpetuating a system that feeds off black and brown human beings.
So: this is my first step.
I discovered Brownicity.com. And there, I discovered this book. It's a workbook, actually - kind of like a course in book form. Here's what the page says about it: "This journey guide was designed to lead the ‘beginner’ through an enlightening and introspective first steps of race/ism analysis and healing. It can be used to support a group or individual’s study." I've dived in and I'm already getting an education. And I can't wait to learn more.
We're not going to change the world in a day. Or even a week. But each of us can start taking steps to unlearn racism. (Yes, even a proud "non-racist" like me has racism to unlearn.) This doesn't have to be your book or your path. But do *something* to start listening. In the barest glimpses of social media, you're bound to find lists of books, movies, documentaries, podcasts, and so on. I've already seen more of those than I can count. (Cont'd in comments)
