What I’ve Learned from a Year+ in the Darn Good Yarn of the Month Club

Knitting Supplies

Want fabulous yarn brought right to your door every month? Darn Good Yarn is the subscription box you need in your life

A little over a year ago, I wrote about a new yarn subscription service I had just tried out. This was the Darn Good Yarn of the Month Club.

I continue to have this subscription. And I thought I ought to revisit this service and give an overview of my experience.

What You Get with Darn Good Yarn of the Month Club

(The following is an affiliate link. If you subscribe to DGYotM Club, or make any other purchase, I may make a commission. Thanks for supporting Knitting for Charity!)

What exactly is the Darn Good Yarn of the Month Club?

In a nutshell, for $10 a month (plus shipping costs), you’ll receive a skein of exclusive Darn Good Yarn of the Month Club yarn. You’ll also receive a pattern with which you can use the yarn, as well as a special gift.

The special gifts have varied wildly! I’ve received everything from a set of chunky and short DPNs to a shimmery tote bag to stitch markers to sheep charms to bookmarks to buttons. I never have any idea what kind of gift I’ll receive next, which is definitely part of the fun.Darn Good Yarn of the Month gifts

The yarns have also varied, though not quite as wildly. Various recycled silk yarn has definitely been the most common thread. I think I’ve received about 7 different skeins of recycled silk. I’ve received yak wool once or possibly twice, sari silk ribbon yarn once, another ribbon yarn another time, and even banana fiber.

The one thing all of the yarn has had in common is that every one has been gorgeous!Darn Good Yarn goodies and yarns and projects

I’ve used the accompanying patterns only a few times. Usually I’ve come up with my own plans for the yarns. I’ve made headbands a few times, a cowl once, a shawlette once, and even a small pair of fingerless mitts. I’ve even arm-knitted a scarf!

I do like receiving the patterns, even when I don’t use them, because they usually lead to other ideas as to how I can use the yarn.

What’s Changed & What I’ve Learned with the Darn Good Yarn of the Month Club

One thing I’ve noticed over the past year is that the packaging has improved tremendously. Originally I received a somewhat generic plastic shipping envelope. A few months into my subscription, packaging evolved into a fun purple and white plastic shipping envelope.

Over the past several months, the packaging has evolved into boxes. I absolutely love these boxes! They’re cute and reusable, and I used the last one I received as a “project box.” Yarn and needles and project (since it was small) all fit easily into the box.

In addition to the beautiful yarn and the joy of getting new yarn every month (so fun!), one thing I appreciate about my Darn Good Yarn of the Month subscription is that I can skip a box whenever I want. I’m actually currently skipping boxes because I have several skeins I haven’t used yet! (Oops.)

Skipping boxes is not the most intuitive process. But once you know where to look and how to do it, it’s pretty easy. Below is a quick video I made to demonstrate the process.

One more fun bonus of Darn Good Yarn of the Month Club is the bonus points. With every box you receive, you also get 100 “karma points.” You can exchange these for rewards like $5 and $10 gift cards. I recently used a gift card to order a journal at a steep discount.

Darn Good Yarn of the Month: Monthly Joy in the Form of Yarn

I really appreciate everything about Darn Good Yarn. They have great customer service. Their yarns are beautiful and fun to knit with. And I love their mission, which is to allow women in developing countries a chance to practice a craft and provide for their families. (See my first article about Darn Good Yarn for more about that.)

Overall, I continue to love my Darn Good Yarn of the Month Club subscription. I highly encourage anyone who loves beautiful yarn and appreciates any opportunity to do good to subscribe. If you’d like to do so, head to their subscription page.  (This is an affiliate link. If you subscribe to DGYotM Club, or make any other purchase, I may make a commission.)

Are you missing your in-person knitting nights? If Are you missing your in-person knitting nights? If so, let me tell you about a virtual knitting event you won't want to miss!

The great folks at Knit + Escape are holding a Galentine's Day virtual celebration from Feb. 4 to 6. A $10 ticket will give you access to vendor virtual booths and a whole lot of free content that includes fiber demos and lectures, farm tours, charity knitting, and much, MUCH more.

And here's a bonus that I hope you'll love: your Marketplace Ticket includes access to the Friday Evening CHARITY KNIT NIGHT, an exciting event led by Kristy Glass, where I will be a special guest. We’ll have several opportunities for participants to ask questions and celebrate the spirit of giving!

I'm going to be talking about creating Bonding Hearts and how these wonderful little creations can help preemies and their families through an amazing organization called Mighty Miracles Foundation.

I would LOVE to see you there, so I hope you'll join us! You'll find a registration link to this event in my profile.
(Please note: the following has nothing to do with (Please note: the following has nothing to do with charity knitting. But I can't be silent any longer. If I - and Knitting for Charity - am going to be for making the lives of others better, I have to speak up.) I've been wanting to say something for well over a week. But I felt like it wasn't my place to talk. This isn't my experience. I should be listening.
But I want to make something clear.
Systemic racism is not a theory. It's not a kooky idea. It's a fact of life. And whether white people feel like they've benefited from it or not (I'm sure most of us feel like we haven't)... we have.
Sure, slavery is no more. Sure, Jim Crow laws are no more. But racism? It's still very much here. And it pushes down our brothers and sisters of color every. single. day. It makes them fear for their lives, no matter what they're doing. It makes their very existence a risk.
And I've finally realized that it's not enough for me to believe these things in my heart and go on with my life as if there's nothing more I can do. It's not enough to be proudly "not a racist." By my silence, by my inaction, I'm perpetuating a system that feeds off black and brown human beings.
So: this is my first step.
I discovered Brownicity.com. And there, I discovered this book. It's a workbook, actually - kind of like a course in book form. Here's what the page says about it: "This journey guide was designed to lead the ‘beginner’ through an enlightening and introspective first steps of race/ism analysis and healing. It can be used to support a group or individual’s study." I've dived in and I'm already getting an education. And I can't wait to learn more.
We're not going to change the world in a day. Or even a week. But each of us can start taking steps to unlearn racism. (Yes, even a proud "non-racist" like me has racism to unlearn.) This doesn't have to be your book or your path. But do *something* to start listening. In the barest glimpses of social media, you're bound to find lists of books, movies, documentaries, podcasts, and so on. I've already seen more of those than I can count. (Cont'd in comments)
