Blue Light Babies: Giving Babies Born in Unusual Circumstances the Best Start
Recently I was contacted by Jo Owen via the Knitting for Charity Facebook page. She wrote to let me know of Blue Light Babies and their need for knitters. Here is what she wrote:
“We are Blue Light Babies. The aim of the appeal is to stock every front line ambulance with a baby hat and blanket. It started from an appeal in Scotland and now is nationwide. We have a coordinator covering every area, so any items made will stay local to those who make them.
“I am a serving member of North East Ambulance service. Blue Light Babies is a Facebook group I set up to help the Angel Wings appeal.” [Angel Wings provides help and support to bereaved parents, including burial gowns for babies.]
“The Scottish ambulance service asked if they could provide baby hats and blankets to put on all front line ambulances. The appeal has been so well-received that we are now UK-wide. Our aim is to provide every front line ambulance with a baby hats and blankets. Babies often arrive in the most unexpected places, and ambulances do not carry any baby specific blankets or hats.
“In association with Angel Wings, we have coordinators all around the country. This means that items made and donated will stay in that locality to be used on ambulances.”
How You Can Help
Check out the Facebook pages of both groups: Blue Light Babies and Angel Wings. You’ll find tons of photos on the Angel Wings Facebook page that shows the many hats and blankets already made by volunteers.
