Hats for War-Torn Syria / Friends of Salaam Cultural Museum Helping Syrian Refugees
Hats for War-Torn Syria is a charity I’ve written about before. As it turns out, they are now in partnership with Friends of Salaam Cultural Museum Helping Syrian Refugees. This is a group based in Seattle that passes along medical care, warm clothing and other basic necessities, and gifts of comfort to Syrian refugees now living in Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon via the Salaam Cultural Museum.
The Museum is a Seattle non-profit organization that works to promote understanding of the people, cultures, languages, religions, and lands of the Middle East and Northern Africa. Over the past 5 years, they’ve also sent teams to Jordan to provide a variety of medical care services to Syrian refugees. While in Seattle they also collect provisions to take to Syrian refugees.
If you’d like to help Syrian refugees but would rather not pay exorbitant shipping fees to send knitted items, this is a fantastic way to do so. Check out the link above for Hats for War-Torn Syria; in the Facebook and Ravelry links you’ll find guidelines and information on where to take your finished projects.
Family Works
Knitting for charity is always special when you do it for children! FamilyWorks operates two food banks and a Family Resource Center and would love to provide warm clothing to homeless and low-income families, especially in winter and around the holidays. If you would like to add your warm scarves, hats, and sweaters to the cause, call the main FamilyWorks number at (206) 694-6727 or bring them by to: 1501 N. 45th St. Seattle, 98103. Check the website for hours.
Phinney Friends
The Phinney Friends are a lovely group of crocheters and knitters that meet every Thursday to create lap robes and shawls for nursing home patients as well as hats for the homeless. I hear they’re approaching their 2,000th lap robe (and may have achieved this milestone by the time you read this!).
Knitters and crocheters are welcome to come knit with the group on Thursdays from 10:00 am to 11:30 am in Room 6 of the Phinney Neighborhood Center on 6532 Phinney Ave. N., Seattle, Washington 98103 (Susan tells me they now have elevators to help you get to the 3rd floor). Conversely, you can knit or crochet on your own time and drop off completed items at the office; Susan asks that you bag them and mark “Phinney Friends.” The office is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
So if you’re in the state of Washington and would like to knit for charity, I think you’ll enjoy contributing to any of these groups!
